yeah I understand your fear of going overboard with some things, whenever I feel like that I, create a new layer and paint on top, that way if I screw up I can easily turn the layer off - or lower it's opacity which works miracles most of the times

Definitely you should give it some time off. When we look on a single piece for too long, sometimes we miss bits and pieces. Usually when I stop working on a piece for the day, coming to it the next day, or two days later I find many things that need improvement. Of course this drags the completion time wayyy far
Another good way of spotting mistakes and so on is to flip the image horizontally.
